Bluethumb Pro: Pay $29 a Month to Be Seen - or Accept That You Will Not Be

3 July 2026  ·  7 min read

Bluethumb's pitch to artists is simple. It is free to join. No upfront costs. No listing fees. Just upload your work and start selling. That pitch is technically accurate. What it leaves out is that free membership and visible membership are not the same thing.

What is Bluethumb Pro?

Bluethumb Pro is a paid subscription tier available to artists at $29 per month or $290 per year. It provides access to a suite of features that are unavailable on the free tier, including scheduled artwork publishing, advanced analytics, a profile carousel gallery, custom discount codes, and - most significantly - VIP listings.

Bluethumb's own documentation describes the VIP listing feature this way: "By using the VIP listing option your work will show on our dedicated New Exclusives listing page, you will be shown on the home page New Exclusives carousel, these works are more likely to be used for off site marketing, curations and advertisement."

Read that carefully. Home page placement. Off-site marketing. Curations. These are the visibility mechanisms that determine whether collectors see your work. They are locked behind a paid subscription.

What does the free tier actually give you?

The free tier gives you a profile and the ability to upload and list work. It does not give you scheduled publishing to optimise your posting time. It does not give you advanced analytics to understand which works are performing. It does not give you VIP listing placement on the home page carousel. It does not give you priority consideration for curations and off-site marketing.

Bluethumb's own Pro documentation contains this remarkable sentence: "It's important to note that just subscribing to Bluethumb Pro won't guarantee you more followers, likes or sales."

They are telling you that paying $29 a month does not guarantee results. What they are not saying - but what is implied by the existence of the Pro tier - is that not paying makes meaningful visibility considerably harder to achieve.

The algorithm and the revenue cycle

The algorithm on Bluethumb rewards artworks that generate engagement and sales. Artworks that generate engagement and sales are more likely to appear in the main browsing feed. Artworks that appear in the main browsing feed generate more engagement and sales. It is a self-reinforcing loop.

For new artists without the initial algorithmic boost, or for established artists whose work has slipped out of the promoted categories, the free tier offers very limited pathways back into visibility. The Pro tier's VIP listings and home page carousel placement are among the only levers available to artists who are not already in the promoted tier - and those levers cost $29 a month on top of the 44% commission on every sale.

So the true cost of selling on Bluethumb for an artist relying on Pro to maintain visibility is: 44% of every sale plus $348 per year in subscription fees. On $10,000 in annual sales that is $4,400 in commission plus $348 in subscription - $4,748 to a platform for the right to sell your own work.

The marketing spend on top

And then there is the additional marketing spend that Bluethumb previously offered - paid promotional packages for individual artworks that artists could purchase for several hundred dollars each. Some artists have reported spending $300 or more on a single promotional push for one artwork. That money goes to Bluethumb. It is separate from the commission. It is separate from the Pro subscription. It is a third revenue stream extracted from artists who are already paying to be on the platform and paying 44% on every sale.

What other businesses charge this way?

A shopping centre charges retailers rent. It does not also charge a percentage of every sale. A real estate agency charges a commission on sales. It does not also charge a monthly subscription for the right to have your listing appear in search results. A directory charges a listing fee. It does not also take a cut of every transaction that results.

Bluethumb combines all three models simultaneously. Listing is nominally free but algorithmically punished without payment. A subscription buys visibility. And a commission is charged on every sale. The artist is paying at every stage of the commercial process for the right to use a platform that could not exist without them.
