The Bluethumb VIP Trap: How Exclusivity Costs You Even When Nothing Sells

4 July 2026  ·  6 min read

The VIP listing on Bluethumb is presented as an opportunity. Tick the box and your work gets home page placement, carousel features, and priority consideration for off-site marketing and curations. It is the platform's most visible promotional tool and it is only available to Pro subscribers.

What is buried in the terms is the cost of that opportunity - not in dollars, but in rights.

What are the VIP listing terms?

From the Bluethumb Membership Agreement:

"Bluethumb does not demand exclusivity in the sale of an artwork, unless the artwork is listed on Bluethumb as a 'VIP' listing whereby it may only be sold on Bluethumb exclusively, for a minimum period of sixty (60) days from listing. Artists who breach VIP listing rules (for example by selling a VIP listed artwork elsewhere during the 60 day exclusivity period) must pay Bluethumb the commission they would have otherwise paid should it have been sold on Bluethumb."

What does this actually mean?

It means that if you tick the VIP box on an artwork priced at $3,000 and then sell it at your own studio open to a collector who walked in off the street - a collector who has never heard of Bluethumb, who did not find you through the platform, who has no connection to Bluethumb whatsoever - you owe Bluethumb $1,320.

Not because they made a sale. Not because they were involved. Not because the collector was a Bluethumb lead. But because the artwork had the VIP tick on it and 60 days had not yet passed.

Bluethumb made no sale. They did no work. They are owed nothing in any rational commercial sense. But you agreed to their terms, and their terms say they get commission on a transaction they had nothing to do with.

Who is VIP listing actually designed for?

VIP listing is designed to benefit Bluethumb. The home page placement and carousel features are real - they do generate visibility. But the exclusivity clause converts that visibility into a financial lock. While your work is VIP listed, every alternative channel you could sell through - your own website, your studio, a gallery, a market, another platform - carries the risk of triggering a commission payment to Bluethumb on a sale they had no part in.

An artist who uses VIP listing extensively is, in effect, agreeing to sell exclusively through Bluethumb and pay 44% commission, without Bluethumb having to formally call it an exclusivity arrangement. They get the commercial benefit of exclusivity without having to offer the artist anything in return for it - no reduced commission, no guaranteed promotion, no minimum sales commitment.

The 60-day window

Sixty days is a long time in an artist's commercial cycle. An artist who lists their strongest work as VIP in January cannot sell that work at a studio open in February without risking a commission payment. They cannot list it on another platform. They cannot sell it to a collector who approaches them directly through any channel. For 60 days, that artwork belongs commercially to Bluethumb - and Bluethumb paid nothing for that right except the promise of placement in a carousel.

What should artists know before ticking the VIP box?

Read the exclusivity clause in full before using VIP listing. Understand that the 60-day window applies regardless of how a sale happens - even if Bluethumb had no involvement in bringing the buyer to you. And understand that the clause is enforceable because you agreed to the membership agreement when you created your account.

The VIP label sounds like recognition. It is a commercial lock-in mechanism. The two things are not the same.
